THE PEACOCK TRACT COMMUNITY
The historic Peacock Tract community is the heart and story of the Black Freedom Struggle in Montgomery. Peacock Tract neighborhood was home to leaders for the civil rights movement from emancipation through the pivotal events of the 1950s and 1960s.
In tandem with the Centennial Hill community, both neighborhoods hosted crucial strategy meetings in the creation of Civil Rights-focused institutions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Churches in both neighborhoods hosted pivotal mass meetings during the Bus Boycott and for events in the 1960s. Both neighborhoods suffered from retaliatory measures, from the bombings of January 1957 and the destruction caused by the interstate highways system and interchanges in the 1960s and 1970s. The Civil Rights Movement history in Montgomery will be forever tied to the people, places, and events of the Peacock Tract. Read more...
